1. What is Eric's equipment setup?
Many issues of various guitar magazines have articles. There
are many postings in the archives of the list. We have a page
up on ericjohnson.com.
2. Where can I read a decent bio/article?
Try Eric Johnson's Bio.
3. Why does it take so long for Eric to put out
an album?
Eric is a perfectionist. That's the reason he's so good and
the reason it takes so long for him to do albums. In his case
you can't have one without the other so get used to it. In the
case of Venus Isle he was trying to get a groove different from
anything he had gotten in the past. Learning a whole new thing
takes time. Also Ah Via Musicom was a slow starter with long
legs, as they say in the business. As he was working on VI he
was having to support AVM by touring. Expect there to never
be that great a delay in the future. I wouldn't expect albums
yearly though. ;-)
4. Where can I send Eric something?
Please don't. He is a very nice person who feels he needs to
personally respond to the letters/tapes/etc. he receives. This
takes time he has little of to spare and results in more pressure
on him. Please, just send warm thoughts through the ether. If
you just have to ask him something, put it on
the Official Eric Johnson Mailing List. I'm going to ask him
a few questions every month or so but no promises are made herein
that they will be your questions.
5. Is there a fan club?
Yes you can reach it by writing to:
Eric Johnson Fan Club
PO Box 5249
Austin, TX 78763
There is a newsletter you can receive through the fan club
which provides information on merchandise, tour dates and other
news.
6. What was Mariani?
Mariani was and is Vince Mariani who with Eric on guitar and
Jimmy Bullock on bass recorded a demo in the fall of 1969. They
pressed 100 copies to use to promote the band in order to get
a major label interested. The records were in white covers and
were autographed by the band. The band played approximately
10 dates in the central Texas area. No deal was ever struck
with a major label and the band broke up in the spring of 1970.
The album is now a major collectible worth over $1000 at last
count. The album has been bootlegged numerous times with the
most recent being a CD from an Italian company which is a horrible
out of sequence version taped off a very bad copy of the album.
It neither gives credit to the actual musicians nor gives accurate
information on Eric's contribution. Eric neither sang or wrote
the compositions on the album.
7. What was the Electromagnets?
The Electromgnets, fondly referred to as the Magnets around
here, were an Austin based jazz/rock band that Eric joined in
1974 and who's rhythm section later became the first Eric Johnson
group. For a whole web site on them look at http://www.io.com/~park.
8. Where can I find more sites on the web about
Eric?
Check the Links page on this site or goto a search engine like
Yahoo!, Excite, Altavista, etc.
9. Where can I get copies of the Austin City Limits shows?
So far there are no authorized sources. Austin
City Limits has started to sell tapes of some of their past
shows though at this time Eric's are not available. I have heard
talk of a guitarist tape in the works, at this point, as far
as I know, all it's just talk.
10. Where can I find bootleg tapes of Eric?
Don't ask here. People involved in this site/list
make their living from selling/leasing the rights to their
intellectual property and have little tolerance for those
who reproduce and distribute material that disregards the
artists desires. The commercial bootlegs have soured many
of us as far as this is concerned. Hey but if you are looking
for any licensed materials, albums, videos, t shirts, etc.
I'll bet you can find them through here.
11. Where can I find Eric's tour itinerary?
12. Eric has problems with tinnitus?
Yes, though it has been better lately. Take care and wear
plugs. Don't think it can't happen to you. When I had a speaker
reconed at the been here for years reconing shop in Austin
the owner said, " I've reconed speakers for every guitarist
in Austin for years and as far as I know there aren't any
rock 'n roll lead guitarists here who don't have tinnitus
to some degree or another. Many have it so bad they have trouble
sleeping."
