Eric Johnson is back and he's brought his new side project with
him. Alien Love Child is its name, a trio including bassist Chris
Maresh and 70's fusion band Electromagnet's drummer Bill Maddox.
The group came together as a diversion from the stress that had
come into being after the release of Johnson's last effort, 1996's
"Venus Isle." Johnson is known for striving to attain perfection
and while "Venus Isle" was a slick recording full of beautiful
melodies and lyrics, critics thought it was a bit too overproduced
and lacked the quality they expected from him.
Luckily for the fans who have been waiting for four years, "Live
and Beyond" does not disappoint. It's a live album through and
through complete with small imperfections. Malford Milligan of
Storyville joins the trio on lead vocals on a few tunes, notably
"Once a Part of Me." Somehow this trio manages to create a fat
sound that would make the listener think that there are more than
just three musicians on stage. This blues flavored recording is
sure to be enjoyed by guitar players and lovers of guitar music
alike.
"Elevator Sky Movie" proves that there is nothing better than
Johnson and his guitar alone on stage. He is able to shine and
prove to the audience that he still can rock with the best of
them. Other notable tunes are "Shape I'm In" displaying Johnson's
vocal talent as well as his version of Jimmie Vaughn's "Don't
Cha Know." It's also key not to miss "The Boogie King," dedicated
to John Lee Hooker.
Recorded in Johnson's home state of Texas, "Live" displays of
all the talents this man possesses. From soloing to singing, Johnson
does it all. Often heralded as a master of tone, this album shows
that Johnson is more than just a studio virtuoso. He is able to
get a live sound that many guitar players cannot even master in
the studio with the aid of electronics and equipment.
For those still skeptical about Johnson's live performance, there
is a great opportunity to check his skills out in person. On February
16, Johnson will play at the Vic with Alien Love Child. Pick up
"Live" and then pick up tickets to the Vic. The "Tone Ranger"
is back and he's continuing to floor audience after audience.
